"Working together for a safer tomorrow."

The Chilton County Sheriff's Office is the primary law enforcement agency for the unincorporated areas of Chilton County and handles numerous law enforcement functions throughout the entire County. Chilton County is located in the geographical center of Alabama and encompasses 699 square miles. The 2010 Census estimated the County's population at 43,643. That is up from 42,444 in 2007 at an increase of 1,199 within 3 years. With this population increase, there is a greater demand placed on law enforcement. Crimes, calls for service and arrests have dramatically increased as statistics from the Alabama Criminal Justice Information Center indicate.

Chilton County is located between two metropolitan areas, Montgomery and Birmingham. Twenty-seven (27) miles of Interstate 65 runs through Chilton County connecting these two Metro areas. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, the daily traffic count on this stretch of Interstate 65 is 35,870 vehicles. The increase in traffic flowing through the County has also elevated the number of calls for service such as disabled motorists, traffic accidents, and violations of traffic laws. This increase has placed an even greater demand on law enforcement within the County.

Also within Chilton County, Mitchell Lake is located between Mitchell Dam and Lay Dam on the Coosa River. Mitchell Lake has 147 miles of shoreline and an area of 5,850 acres that stretches over 14 miles long. The Mitchell Dam is located on the south end of the lake and was constructed by the Alabama Power Company to begin generating electricity for the region in 1923. The Lay Dam is located in the North part of Chilton County and is a hydroelectric power Dam that helps contribute to Chilton County as well. Lay Lake covers 12,000 acres and has a shoreline about 289 miles long. It is a recreational lake with fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill and other sunfish, crappie, catfish, striped bass, hybrid, and white bass. Lay Lake has hosted the Bassmaster Classic four times: 1996, 2002, 2007, and 2010. Alabama Power maintains seven public access sites on the lake. Mitchell Lake and Dams is a great asset to the County. Along with providing Chilton County with resources, Mitchell Lake and Lay Lake provides a fabulous recreational location for our community and tourist.

The Chilton County Sheriff's Office also has the privilege of serving our community and assisting in numerous recreational events throughout the year. With the help of our local municipalities such as Clanton, Jemison, Thorsby, and Maplesville Police Departments, we serve and assist in many Community events. Our local law enforcement agencies come together and assist in events, such as the Peach Festival, En Fuego, Relay for Life Fundraisers, parades, and many more recreational activities. Assisting other law enforcement agencies and participating in events to better help serve the community allows our office to interact with the citizens of our County. The Chilton County Sheriff's Office believes that everyone working together makes for a safer tomorrow.
